His 2017 rookie cards are the backbone of that market — and the most-searched Chiefs cards of all. This is a guide to the ones that matter, tier by tier. We publish verified card numbers and print runs wherever a checklist backs them — but 2017 Panini football has no free published checklist reachable from here, so rather than print numbers we cannot source, each tier links straight to live eBay listings where you can read the number off the card itself alongside the grade and asking price. The flagship base rookies

These are the cards most collectors mean when they say “Mahomes rookie” — the chromium base rookies from Panini’s 2017 lineup:

• Panini Prizm — the hobby benchmark. The silver Prizm is the widely recognized key base rookie, with the plain base below it and a full rainbow of colored numbered parallels above. • Donruss Optic — the chromium sibling of paper Donruss, printed on the same shiny stock as Prizm and carrying the Rated Rookie designation on a Holo base finish plus its own run of numbered color parallels. • Select — built on Prizm’s chromium stock but organized into three base tiers named after stadium seating: Concourse (most common), Premier Level (mid), and Field Level (scarcest). Mahomes appears at all three; collectors chasing the toughest version target the Field Level rookie and its own colored-prizm and die-cut parallels. A strong mid-market rookie with lots of variety.

The premium autographed rookies

The top of the Mahomes rookie market is the on-card autographs:

• National Treasures Rookie Patch Auto (RPA) — the blue-chip chase card: an on-card autograph paired with a game-worn-style patch. This is the card at the very top of the Mahomes rookie pyramid.
• Panini Contenders Rookie Ticket autograph — the iconic, most-collected rookie autograph line in football. The Rookie Ticket auto is the accessible entry into signed Mahomes rookies relative to National Treasures, with its own tiered variations.

For anything in this tier, only buy graded or reputable-authenticated copies — autographs are the most-faked cards in the hobby.

How to buy Mahomes rookies

• Prefer graded. On a card this valuable and this counterfeited, a PSA, SGC, or BGS slab authenticates condition and removes most of the risk. Raw is fine only for low-cost base copies.
• Know the parallel ladder. A “Prizm rookie” can mean the base, the silver, or a numbered color parallel — and the price gap between them is enormous. Read the exact card and finish on the listing before you bid.

• Ignore any “Topps Chrome Mahomes rookie.” Topps printed no NFL cards between 2015 and an unlicensed 2024 Topps Chrome Football, whose entire Kansas City team set is retired legends (#93–100) plus rookie Xavier Worthy #208 — no Mahomes at all. His first Topps card of any kind is 2025 Topps Chrome Football base #148, released 15 April 2026, and it is not a rookie. • Compare recent solds. Mahomes moves with his season and the playoffs; check sold comps, not just asking prices, and don’t overpay into a hype spike.
