Travis Kelce is the Kansas City Chiefs’ star tight end and, by most measures, the greatest to ever play the position — rare for a tight end to command this level of hobby demand. His 2013 rookie cards are the backbone of that market and the second-most-searched modern Chiefs cards after Patrick Mahomes. This is a guide to the ones that matter, tier by tier. In keeping with the house rule, we don’t quote card numbers, print runs, or prices here — each tier links straight to live eBay listings so you see the actual cards, grades, and asking prices for sale right now.
If you want the wider picture on Kelce across his whole card catalog — parallels, inserts, and non-rookie autos — start with the Travis Kelce player hub. This page is specifically about the 2013 rookies.
The flagship chrome base rookies
These are the cards most collectors mean when they say “Kelce rookie” — the chromium base rookies from the 2013 lineup. Kelce’s rookie year predates Panini Donruss Optic, which launched for football in 2016, so there is no Optic Kelce rookie. His recognised chrome rookies come from Prizm and — because Topps still held an NFL licence in 2013 — Topps Chrome:
- Panini Prizm — the hobby benchmark chrome rookie. The silver Prizm is the widely recognized key base version, with the plain base below it and a full rainbow of colored numbered parallels above. If you buy one Kelce rookie, this is the one most collectors chase. See the Panini Prizm Football set review for how the Prizm rainbow works.
- Topps Chrome — Kelce’s distinct second chrome rookie. Topps still made licensed NFL cards in 2013, so there’s a genuine Topps Chrome Football rookie with its own refractor rainbow (base → refractor → colored/numbered refractors). This is an option later Chiefs stars simply don’t have.
For his Select cards, check the year and the “RC” designation on the card itself — we have no published checklist source for Select Football’s first year, so we do not assert whether a Kelce Select card can be a rookie. Never pay a rookie premium off a listing title alone.
The premium autographed rookies
The top of the Kelce rookie market is the on-card autographs:
- National Treasures Rookie Patch Auto (RPA) — the blue-chip chase card: an on-card autograph paired with a game-worn-style patch. This is the card at the very top of the Kelce rookie pyramid.
- Panini Contenders Rookie Ticket autograph — the iconic, most-collected rookie autograph line in football. The Rookie Ticket auto is the accessible entry into signed Kelce rookies relative to National Treasures, with its own tiered variations.
For anything in this tier, only buy graded or reputable-authenticated copies — autographs are the most-faked cards in the hobby.
How to buy Kelce rookies
- Prefer graded. On chrome especially, surface and centering swing the grade, and a PSA, SGC, or BGS slab authenticates condition and removes most of the risk. Raw is fine only for low-cost base copies.
- Know the parallel ladder. A “Prizm rookie” can mean the base, the silver, or a numbered color parallel — and the price gap between them is large. Read the exact card and finish on the listing before you bid.
- Check the card itself is a licensed 2013 issue. Unlicensed “custom” cards and later-year Kelce cards both get listed as rookies. How to read a football card covers dating a card from its back and spotting missing NFL team marks.
- Compare recent solds. Kelce moves with the Chiefs’ season and the playoffs; check sold comps, not just asking prices, and don’t overpay into a hype spike.
